MISSIONS THAT MATTER
We conduct pioneering research on marine megafauna to develop and implement evidence-based conservation strategies across three priority regions: West Indian Ocean, Americas, and SE Asia.
OUR 3 PRIORITY REGIONS
- Have a high number of threatened marine species.
- Represent the highest levels of ocean biodiversity.
- Face significant threats from growing human pressures.
Our Projects by Species
Marine Ecotourism
Our research shapes codes of conduct and carrying-capacity limits for wildlife tourism from Mozambique to Indonesia — a dedicated page is on the way.
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

MOZAMBIQUE
MMF has been conducting ground-breaking marine research along Mozambique’s southern coastline since 2003. Our team pioneered the exploration of the Mozambican coastline, made countless scientific discoveries, and is continuing with world-leading research on threatened marine species, specifically sharks, rays, and sea turtles.

FLORIDA
The Florida Manta Project is the first dedicated study of Florida’s manta rays. Florida is home to both a rare manta ray nursery habitat and a large seasonal aggregation of adult manta rays. Our pioneering work aims to fill knowledge gaps in manta ray life history, provide data to government agencies, identify critical habitats, and promote conservation and awareness.

INDONESIA
MMF has been partnering with Indonesian conservation organizations and higher learning institutions to conduct ground-breaking marine research across the Indonesian archipelago since 2012, with a focus on ocean plastics impact on filter feeding megafauna like manta rays and whale sharks.

OUR 3 CORE INITIATIVES
RESEARCH
By 2030, we will be one of the main explorers of marine ecosystems, focusing on megafauna as our flagship species. Our current research focuses on species-level population ecology and conservation biology, with considerable overlap between the two areas.

EDUCATION
We strive to be both a global and local educator: raising public awareness and inspiring action across the world, while working directly with coastal communities and government officials to enhance understanding and support behavioral change.
CONSERVATION
We work to improve the management of existing marine protected areas (MPAs) and develop effective, long-term conservation strategies to protect and restore key habitats. On a regional level, we are a trusted conservation leader, empowering local communities to manage marine resources sustainably.
