Mozambique Country Manager

 

The Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) is committed to saving ocean giants from extinction. It seeks to achieve this objective by developing enduring conservation based on pioneering research, ensuring local conservation action and championing international protection. Its primary operation center and subsidiary here in Tofo, Mozambique, is Associação Megafauna Marinha (AMM) but it operates research projects in locations around the world. Position based in Mozambique.
 

General job description
 
The Country Manager for Mozambique is a managerial role within the Marine Megafauna Foundation and reports directly to the Global Chief Operations Officer. He/she will be involved in managing the day-to-day operations and supervision of our local four key areas – Education, Conservation, Research and Administration.
 

Overall responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the execution of MMF’s country strategy
  • Managing relationships with key stakeholders
  • Overseeing a well-managed and transparent set of accounts
  • Developing business initiatives to cover overhead costs
  • Hiring and managing volunteers and employees in line with the organisation’s needs
  • Ensuring the organisation is in good standing with the local government

 
Required skills:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Portuguese
  • Degree in Management or similar and no less than 4 years of professional work experience
  • Analytical thinker with proven experience in project management, strategy and finance
  • Passionate self-starter able to take the initiative in a constantly changing environment
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiating skills
  • Able to quickly adapt to new situations, with a good dose of charisma and calm diplomacy
  • Able to work effectively across many different cultures, as part of a team and individually

Research Co-ordinator

Its primary operation center and subsidiary here in Tofo, Mozambique, is Associação Megafauna Marinha (AMM) but it operates research projects in locations around the world. Position based in Mozambique.
 

General job description
 
Operating since 2009, MMF has the longest running data set on manta ray species here in Tofo, alongside one of the largest whale shark identification databases worldwide. As the association grows, we believe it is now time to expand the list of studied local megafauna and need a Research Co-ordinator to manage these projects effectively in Mozambique. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for overseeing all AMM scientific activities performed in conjunction with the Underwater Africa (UA) volunteer program.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and oversee existing scientific projects currently active in Tofo
  • Devise and implement new scientific megafauna research projects in Mozambique (inclusive of but not limited to turtles, humpback whales, dolphins)
  • Recruit researchers that will implement these projects
  • Co-ordinate activities with UA volunteer program, including all research dives and the scientific element of the UA program provided by AMM
  • Manage calls with principal scientists and interaction with AMM researchers
  • Pursue possible grant opportunities together with the fundraising team to finance current and future projects
  • Manage relationship with University Eduardo Mondlane and national universities in Mozambique
  • Develop relationships/partnerships with other universities globally
  • Administrative and financial responsibility for research department

 
Pre-requisites:

  • Postgraduate degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Conservation or related subject
  • Professional working proficiency in Portuguese and English
  • Demonstrable project and time management skills
  • Good communicator and at ease with establishing and maintaining relationships
  • Certified diver at least Advanced Open Water with the expectation that they will train to Rescue Diver once here, (Divemaster preferred)
  • Able to inspire everyone else around with his/her immense passion for the ocean and its amazing marine biodiversity
