Business Development Officer

 

The Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) is committed to saving ocean giants from extinction. Its primary operation center and subsidiary here in Tofo, Mozambique, is Associação Megafauna Marinha (AMM) but it operates research projects in locations around the world. Position based in Mozambique.
 

General job description
 
The Business Development Officer is responsible for developing initiatives that will ensure that the growth of the organization is sustainable. She/He will work closely with the Mozambique Country Manager (CM) in developing and executing the local strategy and will support the global development team in relevant Mozambique-based partnership opportunities.

 

Overall responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop fledgling local business initiatives and new revenue streams to support the growth of the organization e.g donor expeditions, Corporate Social Responsibility, fundraising events, corporate partnerships
  • Supporting the CM in developing and executing the local strategy

 

Required experience and skills:

  • Previous experience in business development
  • Demonstrable experience in managing successful client accounts
  • Experience in developing events or tour itineraries
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Fluency in Portuguese and English/li>
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Creativity
  • Excellent presentation skills

 

The ideal commitment length is 3-6 months. This is a unique opportunity for personal and professional development and a chance to contribute meaningfully to marine conservation.

 

Compensation details: Accommodation provided in a shared room with an incredible sea view. Note this internship is during the peak humpback whale season so watching whales breach from the veranda is a daily occurrence! Reduced price diving available.

 
 

Field Officer, Alternative Livelihoods

General job description
 
The Associação Megafauna Marinha is recruiting a field officer to work with fishing communities in Inhambane Province. The role will focus on alternative livelihood development (helping fishing communities to develop additional income generating activities, thus reducing their dependency on fishing). The position will be based at AMM’s office in Tofo but will involve frequent travel to other communities in the province.

 

The post is initially for a six-month fixed term contract. Salary according to experience.

 

Required skills:

  • Passion for community development and conservation
  • Spoken Portuguese, English and Guitonga

 

Oficial de Campo, Meios Alternativos de Subsistência

A Associação Megafauna Marinha pretende recrutar um oficial de campo para trabalhar junto das comunidades pesqueiras na província de Inhambane. O trabalho será enfocado nos meios alternativos de subsistência (ajudar as comunidades pesqueiras a desenvolver atividades de geração de renda, de forma a reduzir a dependência da pesca). O candidato seleccionado estará baseado no escritório da Associação no Tofo, mas fará visitas frequentes às comunidades na província de Inhambane.
 
Oferecemos numa primeira fase contrato de 6 meses. A remuneração será de acordo com a experiência.

Research Assistant

Its primary operation center and subsidiary here in Tofo, Mozambique, is Associação Megafauna Marinha (AMM) but it operates research projects in locations around the world. Position based in Mozambique.
 

General job description
 
The Research Assistant position is a voluntary role with MMF in Tofo, reporting directly to the Research Coordinator. He/She is responsible for collecting, recording, and organizing data for MMF’s 13-year megafauna database and helping with day-to-day operations of the research center.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in research dives to collect and record data for MMF’s long-term manta ray sightings database
  • Participate in ocean safaris to collect and record data for MMF’s long-term whale shark sightings database
  • Data include: GPS tracks; environmental variables; photographic identification of marine megafauna including whale sharks, manta rays, leopard sharks, potato bass, turtles, and bowmouth guitarfish; behavioral observations; species sexing
  • Upload and match identification photos on whaleshark.org and mantamatcher.org
  • Help match and maintain public contributions to whaleshark.org and mantamatcher.org
  • Record and maintain data logging in the office, and backed up on hard-copy and online
  • Give weekly presentations to the public on manta rays and/or whale sharks
  • Contribute toward MMF’s social media outputs, including: blogs, Facebook posts, and videos
  • Assist in training of new research assistants
  • Work with MMF’s volunteer branch, Underwater Africa (UA), on MMF and UA scientific projects
  • General assistance with MMF’s manta ray and whale shark research programs
  • The Research Assistant will report to the Mozambique Research Coordinator

 
Required skills:

  • Divers should have at least 50 dives and be qualified to PADI rescue diver level, or dive master preferable
  • Applicants must be able to commit to 3 months and preferably longer
  • An undergraduate degree is required; a scientific background is preferable
  • Applicants must supply their own dive and/or snorkel gear (except tanks and weight belts)
  • Applicants are responsible for their own visas and medical insurance
  • Applicants should be physically fit
  • Applicants must be comfortable in shared living arrangements with basic amenities. Tofo is a friendly tourist town within a remote provincial area
  • This position requires a $10 per day contribution for accommodation and training costs
